Tyre Repairs
A puncture doesn’t always mean a new tyre. In many cases, a clean puncture to the central area of the tread can be repaired safely, legally, and at a fraction of the cost of a replacement. At Harrow MOT & Service Centre, we inspect every puncture properly before recommending a repair or a replacement because the right answer depends on where the damage is, how large it is, and the condition of the tyre overall.
British Standard BS AU 159 sets out the conditions under which a tyre can be safely repaired. A puncture within the central three-quarters of the tread, caused by an object no larger than 6mm in diameter, can generally be repaired using a proper patch-plug method. Damage to the sidewall, punctures outside the repairable zone, or tyres that have been driven on while flat cannot be repaired safely – and we won’t attempt to do so. If a repair isn’t appropriate, we’ll tell you why and give you a clear quote for a replacement.
A tyre repair carried out correctly involves removing the tyre from the rim, inspecting the inside for hidden damage, and applying a combination patch-plug from the inside out. An external plug-only repair – the kind carried out at the roadside with a plug kit – is not considered a permanent or road-legal fix and should always be followed up with a proper repair or replacement. At Harrow MOT & Service Centre, we do it properly every time.
We carry out tyre repairs at our Harrow workshop and can usually fit you in quickly – a puncture isn’t something you want to leave. If you’re unsure whether your tyre is repairable, bring it in and we’ll take a look and we’ll have you back on the road as quickly as possible.
Proud to be affiliated with the Institute of the Motor Industry (IMI) and accredited by the CTSI Trading Standards Approved Code scheme, Harrow MOT & Service Centre is a respected and popular independent garage, trusted by motorists from across our local Harrow area and from across North and North West London.
